Excellent post zipper. I am an accountant (semi retired) and have been through 45 tax seasons. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have come across a situation where if the person had talked to me to let me know what was happening BEFORE the end of the tax year I could have saved them some tax dollars. There is an old saying...."an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I paraphrased it and say.... "an hour of tax planning is worth $$$$$".
As far as an investment advisor is concerned, again go by personal recommendation and not just a name out of the phone book or a snazzy ad in the paper. Here in Canada the major banks all have investment advisors right in the branches, but the best and most qualified are usually connected with the main branch in town. Key thing to remember as well is that the bank advisors are on salary, not commission, and do not care if there is a little or a lot of activity in your portfolio. There are many financial advisors who are linked to various funds and/or insurance companies who are paid by commission. The more they move you around from fund to fund the more they get paid. My personal experience with advisors is that the bank advisors are more conservative and less likely to steer you into risky investments. In the initial interview with them, they establish with you just how you want to construct your portfolio and how conservative you wish it to be. They then will construct a portfolio which focuses on protection of capital first and rate of return second.

I PM'ed RET over at the IIF this morning after he locked down the last thread...
Hi RET,
I know the last thing you mods need is my 2 cents, but here it goes.
I think you mods need to make up you minds, is the yeasayer lounge protected territory or not? You say not to throw rocks over the fence, but it’s ok to drag someone’s post out in the middle of the street and kick, stab, punch, mock, and ridicule it to death?
If Susie doesn’t like it she can turn her head and look the other way. What realest would do that if they were being personally attacked for what they posted, especially if it was pulled from the "realest lounge" and reposted? Debating is one thing but we all know it won’t stop there, someone always gets ugly and personal.
I suggest that if the realest can drag a post from the yeasayerland and behave, fine. But if they continue to personally attack the poster stop letting them do it.
Why do the “realest” need to see the rumor when they boldly confess they don’t believe in them in the first place?
Btw, you guys are great babysitters, thanks!

We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.
