International Compact with Iraq

Has anyone taken the time to read through all 30 pages of the compact? I had to open it in Microsoft word.

I just scanned through it - nothing different than anything we've already heard - goals for social reform, transition away from 'welfare' (subsidy) system, accession to WTO, modernizing the banking system, passing the HCL, establishing treaties, establishing taxes/tariffs, rebuilding/managing everything from public health, agriculture, water, power, santitation, etc.

Nothing specific like what we'd like to see (ie value of dinar to be such-and-such by a certain date) but we shouldn't expect to. In our own system, Congress doesn't micromanage it, that's what our Fed does. This just reinforces to me that the big announcement will come from the CBI.

I hate to sound cynical, but the ICI could be really super fantastic and the day of a new era for Iraq, or more toilet paper to go along with 99% of UN resolutions. It sounds great. Will the GoI actually accomplish these goals? Who knows? More importantly - what if they don't? No where in those 30 pages is any kind of accountability or responsibility.

If I give my kids a list of chores, along with the list they are informed of both the rewards for successful accomplishment and the otherwise dire consequences - the choice is theirs.

To sum it up, a phrase we often used after a young officer's glowing report of a total BS plan - "It briefs well!"

U.N.: Ban To Attend Iraq Meeting

The U.N. Information Center announced April 29 that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will travel to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to attend a May 3-4 meeting to launch the International Compact with Iraq (ICI). The ICI is a five-year plan that commits participating nations to aid Iraq in developing better governance practices and economic reconstruction. Ban is seeking support from the international community for the initiative.

With June about 3 weeks away would it be possible in the next few days to see if your friend is still holding true to his earlier statement that those who own 1 million dinar will become millionaires in June?

I'm just wondering if the events of the ICI might have made any impact or changes to his prediction. Thanks you very much. Hope you are feeling much better by now.

It is probably time to close this whole fruitless section in the forum and stick with real news and the CBI information. Too many financially desparate people are being misled into investing more than they can afford to lose as a result of claims of reliable sources who have proven to know absolutely nothing time and time again.

I think that there are many who do enjoy speculation and the occasional rumor that are financially responsible. It's unfortunate that people put there hopes on a rumor, kinda like buying a lotto ticket really. So to say close it down for a few who choose not to be responsible is not fair to the group as a whole. I say let it ride.

the only problem with the "real news" thread is that it is ghastly dull. I do scan it myself, but if one took the time to actually read through every article, you'd be a little shrunken green creature with buggy eyes, probably drooling. At least over here in rumors/predictions there is room for a little fun, a little wit. People will find a way to lose money in silly ways, they don't need us to do it. Let's let Neno close this thread if he wants. Come back Neeeennnoooo, come back!
