Law-imposing plan yielded fruitful results, says Maliki
(Adds Maliki's statements during meeting with Rice and more details)
Baghdad, Feb 17, (VOI) – Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said on Saturday that the law-imposing plan have achieved significant successes during the past four days as a large number of families forcefully relocated on a sectarian basis were brought back to their dwellings and original areas.
"The area of al-Madain alone has seen the return of 107 relocated families, for which the government would provide services and ration supplies," Maliki said in statements quoted by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) on Saturday.
The statements were made during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who arrived in Baghdad earlier on Saturday on an unannounced official visit.
"One of the pros of the new plan is that it is orchestrated by Iraqis in coordination with the Multi-National Force in Iraq (MNF-I)," said Maliki, expressing optimism about the plan's success and the country's restoring of its security and stability.
He said the government, meanwhile, is focusing on activating the service sector and providing necessary supplies to Iraqis as well as developing the economy, adding the country's political powers in general were supporting the plan
Received by VOI, a statement issued by Maliki's office quoted him as saying the rate of killings has remarkably decreased as the number of casualties now is nearly 10 on a daily basis.
"The al-Karkh maternity hospital was liberated from the terrorists' grip and there will be another hospital that will be re-operated soon," said the Iraqi premier.
The statement also quoted Rice as renewing the U.S. support for the government and people of Iraq in their efforts to restore security and stability to the war-torn nation.
On the Congress' opposition against sending additional troops to Iraq, Rice replied "this does not mean the Congress did not wish for Iraq's stability and success but it just wants to see practical and positive steps."
Rice praised the success realized by the new security plan, which, she said, swould help Iraqis win more U.S. support.
Rice's unannounced visit on Saturday comes only one day after Maliki had closed-circuit TV consultations with U.S. President George W. Bush.
A media source in Iraq's cabinet had earlier told VOI "Rice is expected to meet today with Maliki and other Iraqi officials," the source, who declined to be named.
Rice's visit is part of her Middle East tour as she is scheduled to meet on Sunday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in an effort to push forward the peace process in the region.

Wasnt really stating my opinion but more so the obvious! But then some people dont or have not read every thread or post like me, or read the marshall plan or read the Internaional Compact for Iraq. Or maybe some people cannot see the similarirites between what Germany did and what Iraq is doing? As I said in a previous post if it does not happen within the next two days it will. As for the handouts yes they are supposed to start on Saturday! Whioch would mean the rate would hopefully change on Sunday or Monday?? Time will tell and good luck to all!

Sorry to tell you but it was your opinion & not the obvious. When you have been in this for a few years like I & many others have been, then you will realize that what we think to be obvious is not like that to the Iraqi Gov. You can talk about all the reading you did till your blue in the face but it doesn't mean a thing if you don't take in all the articles that are coming out. They say things are done & then the next day they say that one sect is not happy with some part & it won't be done for a few days. Nothing is done till it's done with the Iraqis & statements like "it will be" are just a joke, and that's not JMO, it's a fact!!!

Like everything nothing is cofirmed. We know what we know! Do you honestly think they will hold an Oil and Gas summit to disucss the new HCL and negotiate contracts if the law has not already been passed! All will be revealed! Do you believe that they will handout payments to displaced families if the handout did not have purchasing power! Why else would you handlout 100,000 dinar if it was not going to be worth atleast 100,000 USD. Especially since a new house costs anywhere upwards of 127,000USD. What would 78USD buy a displaced family??

I don't think the HCL is a go or no-go as far as a reval is concerned - it seems to me a six-of-one half-a-dozen-of-the-other scenario: Either they establish an HCL that allows profit sharing, which will reduce the GOI's income but greatly accelerate the revamping of the oil infrastructure, so their income rises proportionally with the volume of oil pumped, or they go it alone and more slowly, so the income builds gradually but they get to keep more of it. Either way, the oil is there and the value of it is the same.

Wow, great point smart arse, just not sure why you had to post it three times. Guess all you have is that half a brain to try to figure out how to post properly. I never claimed to be an expert but the way you sound you are one. Thanks for all the answers oh wise one!!!
